The history of Agios Nikolaos is marked by its harbor in the Ammoudi area, which is still the commercial port of the town.
Elounda & Plaka village
The village of Elounda lies about 12 kms north from Aghios Nikolaos, in a long bay formed by the offshore Peninsula of Spinalonga. The picturesque fishing village with the friendly port attracts a lot of tourists in the central square overlooking the sea. There are pocket-sized shingle or sandy beaches, many good for snorkeling.
Spinalonga Island
A caique trip through sparkling blue waters of the bay will take you to the isle of Spinalonga with its Venetian fortress and the haunting deserted buildings of Europe’s last leper colony.

Chryssi
Chrissi or Gaidouronisi, an island 7km long with a maximum width of 2 km, is located 8 nautical miles south of the most southern town in Europe, Ierapetra Crete. It is a flat islet very famous for its tropical blue water that cover all possible palette hues of blue and green, the protected forest with large juniper trees and the thousands of shells, mainly in the north, which is one of the distinguishing features of the island.
